Do Now | Perspectives Journal
The novel Unwind seems to place an expiration date on childhood, reminding the characters within the novel that their entire existence is based on the choices they made during a time that should have been filled with laughter, experimentation, and learning about the world through innocent mistakes. Today, we will do the opposite of Unwind and celebrate childhood through creative thinking and poetry. I Remember....Childhood
Share out one of your responses to the group as a whole. Writing Workshop It is a summer day. You have climbed to the top of a tree in your backyard. You are now too scared to come down. You start screaming for your big brother. Can you picture, feel the emotions of this event? Probably not. Descriptive Writing
Writing Workshop Step 1: recall a moment from your childhood, briefly summarize it in your Perspectives Journal Step 2: start listing the specific details of the moment, if you can't recall specifically provide yourself some creative input based on your personal assumptions about the moment
Step 3: now turn this moment from childhood into an I Remember poem in your Perspectives Journal. Create at least three stanza in your poem, each one starting with the phrase I Remember. Ms. Degenhardt's example I Remember…..Baraboo I remember the cling, cling, cling of the Circus Trolley as it trolled the history of the Ringling Bros; the ghost of Grandma Ringling passing by an upstairs window of the peeling yellow-painted mansion. I remember the sting of sun-kissed skin after hours of bathing in chlorine; the euphoric pride that comes after pushing your muscles to their limits while swimming your team to victory. I remember the roar of the engine, the quickening of the heart, the flipping of the stomach as the boat churned through the waves of the Wisconsin River; the tightened muscles and bruised ribs from bouncing in a water tube. I remember the chorus of shouting voices during a kickball tournament in “the field,” boys against girls, sisters against sisters, neighbors against neighbors; a community of skinned knees and muddy cheeks fighting to rule the block if only for a weekend. I remember the tears and the stabs in the chests when those voices faded, sisters laid to rest; the smile of knowing they are organizing kickball tournaments somewhere else now. I remember a place with rolling cornfields, majestic green bluffs, glassy waters; a "no place like home" type of place. Do Now | See, Think, Wonder

What have we learned about the world of Unwind? I will begin this activity by stating something I have learned about the world of Unwind or the character Connor in the novel. Every student in the room must make some connection. When you have a connection, stand next to the previous person, state your connection and explain how, from the novel, you made this connection. Reading | Unwind, Neal Shusterman (15 minutes) Read Unwind as a group using popcorn format. Each student will read at least one page (they may choose to read up to three pages) aloud then call on the next person to read. Pick a person quickly in order to maintain the flow of the story. Thinking Routine | Color, Symbol, Image (from Friday, 30 minutes) Today we will be reading the book Unwind, by Neal Shusterman.
