Do Now | this i believe...Personal Essay
Today you are going to write a short personal essay based on the place you have been writing and drawing about. Before we begin, let's review what a personal essay is! Personal Essay and Rubric Essential Question What have I come to believe about the world around me? Objectives
A personal essay uses personal experience and observation in order to provide insight about the world. This essay is meant to argue a revelation you experienced. In this case, you are going to explain how, through personal experiences, you have come to understand the definition of community as well as your role in this community. As the writer, you are trying to teach your readers about the life lesson you discovered through this revelation (think theme!). Depending on your student genetics, this might be the most challenging essay you write because there is not a formula for constructing the essay. The qualities of personal essay are limitless: persuasive, subjective, narrative, inventive, descriptive, evolutionary. However, on the surface level this essay is not that much different than the other essays you have written in class; your primary goals should be to present your readers with insight into something you believe about the world and supply evidence to support that wisdom. In general, your essay will contain these components:
Do Now | Freewriting (10 Minutes) Open Google Classroom to find today’s “Freewriting Document.” Select one of the freewriting prompts and write for 5 minutes straight. Do your best to write continuously – first thought, best thought! When the timer is up, submit your document for a Habits of Work grade. Creative Writing Workshop | Map of Place On Friday, you wrote about a place outside that is important to you. Today, you are going to draw a map of this place. This map should include a legend with a key of the important details of the place. Use colored pencils to provide meaning through colors. See Ms. Degenhardt's example below. During your next class period, you will construct a short essay based on this place. Exit Slip | Map of Place
Do Now | Personal Response Journal
The Rules: You must write for 10 minutes straight! You cannot say "I'm done" before the 10 minute time sounds. Today you will write about a place that is not your home or a physical building. Instead, you are going to write about a place OUTSIDE. Specifically, write about a place outside that is important to you. It could be a park, a specific tree, a campground, a swimming pool—anything outside that has a memory you can write about.
Popsicle Share Out: After our writing time is complete, I am going to pull each of your names using our popsicle sticks. When I call your name, stand so we can see who is sharing with us. Share out your place, why it's important to you and one important detail you wrote about. Group Reading Today we are going to the personal narrative We Came For Baseball together as a class. As I read aloud to you, I am going to stop and ask you questions once again using the popsicle stick, so make sure you are paying attention and are prepared to respond! Key Points
